The Tropicana’s $180 million renovation included bringing the swanky Nikki Beach brand to Las Vegas — and there was no way it was going to emerge onto the scene in this town without the splashiest grand opening! There was only one thing to do: throw a South Beach-worthy white party.
Nikki Beach’s white party was talked about for months before the invitations even arrived. I’d been to a few Puff Daddy-hosted white parties in the Hamptons many years ago, but in my memory of five years in Vegas, this was to be the first white party in Sin City. Would the jaded nightclub people here actually wear white head-to-toe? I was excited to find out!
As the editor of Vegas magazine, my social calendar is so packed that I often go to soirees like this one by myself. In this case, my buddy Katz and I paired up, but I knew he’d be running around like crazy interviewing people for his popular column for the Las Vegas Sun. As I was getting ready to head to the Strip, serendipity intervened. My friend Maren had missed her flight home to Omaha and wanted to know what I was doing. “Picking you up for a white party at Nikki Beach!” was my answer, as I grabbed an extra white dress from my closet and ran out to start my night.
And what a night it was! Energetic dancers on stilts, gorgeous painted ladies, mermaids in balloons (something I’d only seen once before — in Bulgaria), tons of white wine and champagne — and everyone did indeed wear white. I saw tons of people from L.A. who I hadn’t seen in years, as well as many of those jaded nightlife types, all in white. The official party went from 6-10 pm, but every time we tried to leave, we’d run into more and more people arriving. I think we left Nikki Beach around 11.
There were tons of local celebs who turned out, but one massive A-lister did, too: Halle Berry — wearing brown. She can do that, though. She’s, uh, Halle Berry.
A mermaid in a bubble…
Out with my girls (here, Jessica) in a sea of white…
Just another night in Las Vegas! Thanks, Nikki Beach. Great (white) party!
