Post-adventure high

Abby Tegnelia

Tired but happy

I’ve mentioned several times how energized I feel after travel of any kind, an almost post-adventure high. That touch of magic I feel by doing something new or experiencing a place far from home gets me hyped up to tackle whatever is in front of me — even if what I have next is just another day at the office. Hyper, smiley, talkative: all of those cheesy words apply. I just think that getting out of your comfort is the coolest thing. No matter how tired I am, it is a different tired, a more satisfied one than I get from beaten down by too many days at work, as much as I love what I do as a magazine editor.

Not everyone is like me.

How-to: guided motorcycle tours through Grand Canyon

Abby Tegnelia After rising at 3:45 am, taking a private jet charter to Arizona during which we saw the sunrise, and then taking a Papillon helicopter tour through the Grand Canyon, our day had yet to reach the grand finale:  Have you ever considered guided motorcycle tours through this glorious national park? Let me tell you — it was amazing! I had one rather sad attempt at being a biker chick awhile back. I felt so uncomfortable that I didn’t even take any photos. But I made up for it this time! Don’t I look like a natural? And I definitely need to buy a leather jacket…

Biker Chick, Take Two

Papillon HelicoptersThe first time I played Biker Chick and took off for an afternoon on a Harley for a motorcycle ride through the desert, I didn’t take a single photo. I vowed to never let that happen again! On my recent day-trip to the Grand Canyon with Papillon Helicopters, which started early enough that I got to see the sunrise over the magnificent national park, we were treated with my second motorcyle ride. This time, we drove through Arizona in a pack. I felt like I was part of the Hell’s Angels! The weather was perfect, the scenery gorgeous — and the ride itself a relaxing break from a busy schedule.

Plenty of bad-a** photos coming up of my motley crew on our bikes — stay tuned for the exciting details of our motorcycle tour!

Vegas to Grand Canyon excursion worth the early rise

Abby TegneliaDo I look like I’ve been up since 3:45 am? Let me tell you — it was worth it! Because I managed to drag myself to the airport by 5:30 am to meet up with Papillon helicopters by late morning, I got to see the sunrise over the Grand Canyon as I flew from Boulder City, Nevada (20 minutes from my house in Las Vegas) to the South Rim. And that was before I got to experience the Canyon in two very different ways. In fact, this unique excursion on Papillon proved to be such an exciting, fun-filled day that I forgot to be tired. As far as day trips go, this was the best of the best! This was my third visit to the world-famous national park; each was special in its own way, but this one was definitely the most exhilarating. And did I mention it was brand-new? I love being among the first to try anything!

Sunrise: Grand Canyon from Above

Grand CanyonLiving in the southwest means I can to take all kinds of trips to places like the Grand Canyon, but I never thought I’d get to see that magical place at sunrise! For all the talk of gorgeous sunsets (for me, usually traveling along the coast of Costa Rica), it is sometimes easy to forget how special seeing the sun rise can be. For me, even though I am often awake when it is still dark, I haven’t been somewhere to actually watch the sun come up since my trip to Panama. So when I was invited to the Grand Canyon on an “early morning” trip, I jumped at the chance. Our private plane took off from the Boulder City airport at 5:30 am. And boy, was it worth it. Watching the horizon start to glow and then the sun shine over the magnificent Grand Canyon — as we flew overhead — left me awestruck.
