Human Aquarium

Las Vegas, travel, tourismNothing shows the Big Divide between Vegas locals and tourists like a Sunday afternoon at Simon Restaurant & Lounge at Palms Place. Inside in the air conditioning, locals sip champagne and dine on sushi and lobster eggs Benedict. Their attire? Chic dresses and heels for the ladies, Sunday best for the guys. The catch is that the tables are surrounded by floor-to-ceiling windows looking out onto the pool. Outside, the Weekend Warriors don their tiniest bikinis and basically try to get as drunk as possible while baking themselves in the hot desert sun. When they see diners staring, they work really hard to put on quite a show, dancing, wading by while trying not to spill their drinks (who would get in that water? ick), falling on the stairs and everything else. There’s not much else to do but watch!

  1. Sounds like fun on both sides of the window to me!

  2. One of the things I love about Vegas — it is always fun!

  3. Sounds like you definitely want a window seat for the hilarity – so Vegas – love it!!

  4. I love the title of this post.

  5. It was out of control! I really wanted a picture of the pink sparkly Speedo, but every time he caught me staring he’d come up to the window.

  6. Oh gosh, I bet you could spend the day there and leave with 10 new blog post ideas!

  7. You’re so right!! I was busy enjoying my friend’s birthday brunch, but I could’ve been a more diligent blogger and gotten enough material for a month!

  8. I love brunch at Simon! When we went, it was too early in the year to swim (or aquarium watch), but it’s such a great restaurant anyway!

  9. It is SO good. This was also my first time during aquarium season!

  10. Human aquarium….hahaha. It seems so awkward because it’s impossible not to stare! haha

  11. Haha it’s impossible not to stare!! But soo awkward when they catch you — not because they get embarrassed, but because they then want to show off!

  12. I want to be both a local and a tourist – both options sound great. Although much as I love the sun, I think lobster eggs benedict wins out over working on my tan.

  13. Haha, that’s funny, they’re really like dolphins in there trying to show off for the crowd!

  14. Mmmm…Simon. I’ve never done the brunch, but I love the food! It’s one of those few places where I ask for a table without a view though.

  15. Why do girls get a kick out of this and not you, Steve? Ha! I admit I was quite horrified though…

  16. LOL, “human aquarium” is right. Sign me up for the inside, please. 🙂

  17. We’ll go next time you’re in town. 😉

  18. I’d rather be on the outside of the aquarium. Only way you’d catch me on the inside is if the Centers for Disease Control was spraying guests down as we came back in.

  19. HA!

  20. ohhh I love this. I think this business model might work well in Costa Rica, too…maybe as an addition to one of the Fiesta Casinos in Guanacaste? :)-

  21. Haha that’s funny. My little Coco wouldn’t know what to do with a pool party like this!

  22. Are there actually any clean pools in Vegas? Or should I just take my chances? Interesting way to spend a Sunday!

  23. Go to a pool party at your OWN RISK!!

  24. This local swims at the Palms Pool! A little alcohol in the water won’t kill you…even during Ditch Fridays it’s still cleaner than Lake Mead. I’ve never been to Simon though, will have to go.

  25. Haha I love it! And you’d LOVE SImon!

  26. Human Aquarium…I love it!

This totally reminds me of the pool at the Flamingo – it was full of frat guys with giant drinks in plastic cups. I’m sure the pool water is actually 25% vodka…and god knows what else. I went into the water for a bit but then got grossed out and got out (and that says a lot since I am a regular swimmer at the ghetto public pool near my house!)

Oh to be a fly on the wall at that pool party 😉

  27. Totally the same scene as Flamingo!! (Out in the pool anyway.)
