Why I am not a Farmers Market Girl

Ferry Plaza Farmers Market Miette

Miette’s all-natural macarons.

In my mind (or an alternate universe — you pick), I am the type of girl who wakes up every Saturday morning, refreshed and ready to hit my local farmers market for some sunshine, fresh food and groceries, and a lively social kick-off to my active weekend. Alas, that has never, ever been the case. By the time my weekend rolls around, after being “on” all week at work and having few too many hours at home, the last thing I want to do is walk around a Farmers Market alone. (The only one in my area is on Sunday anyways.) But if I lived near “the” farmers market in San Francisco, a Ferry Plaza Market devotee I would be.

San Francisco’s Haight Ashbury: still in bloom with flower power

Flower Power Tour IzuPrevious to my most recent trip to San Francisco, I had rarely spent more than one night there at a time, usually on my way to Napa. That all changed with my recent trip with Trafalgar Tours, which prides itself on really digging in and showing off the local flavor of a place. So our first stop (after lunch at Cha Cha Cha of course) in the Bay Area? The famous Haight Ashbury district, where flower power descended in force during a few special years starting in the late 1960s. Our fearless leader: Izu, of Flower Power Tours. The only “complaint” I’ve read in all of my research about the great Izu is that she talks too much. Well, then, if you are on a schedule, speak up — this woman could talk all day about these streets and their history… That’s how much she loves her job!

Something to think about, huh?

How-to: guided motorcycle tours through Grand Canyon

Abby Tegnelia After rising at 3:45 am, taking a private jet charter to Arizona during which we saw the sunrise, and then taking a Papillon helicopter tour through the Grand Canyon, our day had yet to reach the grand finale:  Have you ever considered guided motorcycle tours through this glorious national park? Let me tell you — it was amazing! I had one rather sad attempt at being a biker chick awhile back. I felt so uncomfortable that I didn’t even take any photos. But I made up for it this time! Don’t I look like a natural? And I definitely need to buy a leather jacket…

Biker Chick, Take Two

Papillon HelicoptersThe first time I played Biker Chick and took off for an afternoon on a Harley for a motorcycle ride through the desert, I didn’t take a single photo. I vowed to never let that happen again! On my recent day-trip to the Grand Canyon with Papillon Helicopters, which started early enough that I got to see the sunrise over the magnificent national park, we were treated with my second motorcyle ride. This time, we drove through Arizona in a pack. I felt like I was part of the Hell’s Angels! The weather was perfect, the scenery gorgeous — and the ride itself a relaxing break from a busy schedule.

Plenty of bad-a** photos coming up of my motley crew on our bikes — stay tuned for the exciting details of our motorcycle tour!

Vegas to Grand Canyon excursion worth the early rise

Abby TegneliaDo I look like I’ve been up since 3:45 am? Let me tell you — it was worth it! Because I managed to drag myself to the airport by 5:30 am to meet up with Papillon helicopters by late morning, I got to see the sunrise over the Grand Canyon as I flew from Boulder City, Nevada (20 minutes from my house in Las Vegas) to the South Rim. And that was before I got to experience the Canyon in two very different ways. In fact, this unique excursion on Papillon proved to be such an exciting, fun-filled day that I forgot to be tired. As far as day trips go, this was the best of the best! This was my third visit to the world-famous national park; each was special in its own way, but this one was definitely the most exhilarating. And did I mention it was brand-new? I love being among the first to try anything!
